Biography
I was a faculty member in the Department of Kinesiology and Health at Miami University. I also taught at the University of Cincinnati in the fields of health education, health, fitness, and leisure studies, and substance abuse counseling. I was an elementary school teacher and a school counselor in Taiwan, and am fluent in English, Taiwanese, and Mandarin. During my military services in Taiwan, I served as a mental health counselor.
I have studied at University of Cincinnati, Indiana University, National Dong Hwa University, and National Hualien University of Education, and received my masters degree in Counseling Psychology at National Dong Hwa University, my masters degree in public and community health and my doctoral degree in health promotion and education at the University of Cincinnati. I am also an active Certified Health Education Specialist.
My primary research and teaching focuses on obesity prevention, mental health, addiction, and health promotion and education program planning and evaluation especially in physical activity based or mind and body practices (such as yoga, and mindfulness meditation).
Additionally, my collaboration with faculty in the Substance Abuse Counseling Program at University of Cincinnati has allowed me to pursue research that positively impact substance use and mental health among youth. We have investigated the impact of several family factors (e.g., parent income, neighborhood safety, parent substance use) on personal lifestyle (e.g., substance use, mental health and physical activity).
I have involved in health promotion and education programs for the homeless, people recovering from substance abuse, chronically ill children, older adults, immigrants/refugees, elementary school children coming from low-income families, and people suffered from mental health issues by collaborating with various organizations such as schools, churches, non-profit associations, and hospitals.
In the future, I want to continue applying integrative health intervention to promote healthy lifestyles that enhance physical, mental, and spiritual health for our children, families, schools and communities.
